Why does the forecast change from one day to the next?

Why forecast conditions change as new data arrives and the surf date gets closer.

A forecast is an evolving estimate based on the latest available observations and model calculations. It can change from one day to the next because the input data and the remaining uncertainty change as well.

Weather model updates

Weather and wave models are rerun as new satellite, buoy, weather-station, and atmospheric observations arrive. Each run can adjust the expected wind, waves, and swell, so the forecast may move even when the surf date has not changed.

Forecast confidence

Forecast confidence reflects how closely the available model runs and ensemble members agree. When they cluster around the same outcome, the forecast is more stable. When they spread apart, later updates can produce larger changes.

Longer-range uncertainty

Small differences in the starting atmosphere can grow over time. This makes conditions several days away less certain than conditions in the next day or two, especially when a storm system or changing swell is involved.

Local wind changes

Local wind is particularly important for surf quality. A small change in wind speed or direction can add chop, clean up a wave face, or change how a beach handles the swell, even when the incoming wave height remains similar.

Why forecasts improve as the surf gets closer

As the surf date approaches, the models can use more recent observations and are forecasting over a shorter time window. The range of plausible outcomes usually narrows, giving the forecast a clearer picture of wave, wind, and nearshore conditions. Updates are therefore often more consistent close to the day, although rapidly changing weather can still introduce uncertainty.
