Understanding Swell Direction

Learn how swell direction is measured and how it relates to a spot's orientation.

swelldirection

Swell direction describes the compass bearing the wave energy is coming from. It helps indicate whether a swell can reach a beach and how it will approach the shoreline.

Reading swell direction

  • Directions are measured clockwise from north.
  • The forecast uses the coming-from convention: a swell from 270° is arriving from the west.
  • Compare the swell direction with the spot's facing angle to understand exposure and shadowing.
